These photos were very kindly donated by Barbara, who found them (along with many other photos now archived at the Essex Record Office) among her late father's possessions.
"...My father, W.R. Matthews, who was employed in the architectural practice F.W Mackenzie and Partners, worked on the hospital in the late 50's and early 60's. I remember him talking with great respect about Sir Geoffrey Nightingale, and showing me some of the plans of the hospital. I was then about 11 or 12, and he talked to me about how he was trying to design alterations to the corridors so they would feel less institutional and forbidding. He was responsible for designing what is now the Nightingale Centre, and I still have the programme for the opening by the Duchess of Kent, and a photo of my father being presented to her."
